GHOSTFACE KILLAH CHECKS INTO REHAB ON DEC. 4
Guests include Method Man, Raekwon, U-God and Masta Killa, as well as Beanie Sigel, Styles P and more…

“When you get a new Ghostface Killah album, the only reasonable reaction is to get lost in it,” said the New York Times of Ghost’s last full studio album, ’06’s instant classic Fishscale. And with the December ‘06 release of More Fish and Ghost’s near-constant touring in ‘07, his legions of fans have been happily lost in “The World According to Pretty Toney”. Now, with a new Def Jam album, The Big Doe Rehab, set for release on Dec. 4, his current tour with Rakim, and a coffee-table book set for release on Jan. 8 through MTV Press, the devoted will be positively delirious.

Fishscale, Tony Stark’s return to vivid street tales and gripping narratives of the drug trade, was greeted with universal acclaim and topped crtitcs’ year-end lists unanimously: Rolling Stone (#5), Blender (#5) and Spin (#4) all anointed the return of the Wu’s greatest banger. The Big Doe Rehab finds Ghost and company still in razor-sharp form, weaving a rich, complex tapestry from tales of drugs, violence, paranoia, love, hate and humor over gritty, soulful beats. The lead single “We Celebrate”, featuring Kid Capri, is a party on wax, with Ghost proclaiming “Tony Starks just won an Oscar, y’all!” and Capri hyping up the crowd over Rare Earth’s classic “I Just Want To Celebrate”. Elsewhere, Ghost’s partner in crime Raekwon shows up on two of the album’s standouts, “Yolanda’s House” and “Shakey Dog Starring Lolita”, an epilogue to the Shakey Dog story on Fishscale. On “White Linen Affair (Tony Awards)”, Starks and Theodore Unit associate Shawn Wiggs host through a hilarious, star-studded white linen and “Evian water” affair, complete with the requisite A-list—Janet & Jermaine, Kanye & Keyshia, etc. Ghost truly shines on the album’s quieter, darker, more introspective moments, “Walk Around” and “I’ll Die For You”.

Ghostface’s penchant for dropping random pearls of wisdom is notorious. And so MTV Press has collected a volume of “Toneisms” set for a Jan. 8 release. Co-written by MTV’s J. Brightly and inspired by the popular MTV skits of the same name, “The World According to Pretty Toney” is the modern hustler’s guide to life; Pretty Toney offers nuggets of wisdom on the key elements to becoming your own personal success story: Livin’, Hustlin’, Love, Nutrition, and the all-encompassing Toneology. Coupled with vibrant 4-color photos by Dave Hill that illustrate each pearl of wisdom, and a companion audio disc, these are indispensable life lessons that will teach hustler’s everywhere what to do and what not to do.

Ghostface has also taken those lessons on the road. Presented by Flow TV and Dodge, the HIP-HOP LIVE! Tour showcases the hip-hop’s top wordsmiths backed by an incredible 10-piece live band. Celebrating the progression and possibilities embraced by Hip-Hop culture, Ghost is joined by the legendary Rakim and underground sensation Brother Ali, bringing the show to life with new songs and infectious renditions of the classics you know and love—each energized by the amazing Rhythm Roots Allstars.

GORILLAZ: D-SIDES U.S. RELEASE NOV. 20
Limited special edition to feature exclusive packaging, art, badges, stickers and patch

D-Sides, an assortment of B-sides from Gorillaz‘ multi-platinum second album Demon Days, early demos and previously unreleased tracks compiled together for the first time, has been confirmed for a Nov. 20 U.S. release on Virgin Records.

D-Sides highlights include “Hong Kong”, the lush and lovely track recorded by Gorillaz for Warchild and the surprise hit of last year’s Demon Days Live show (given an exclusive refit here with added strings), the dubbed-out collaboration with The Bees, “Bill Murray”, and the apocalyptic scum-pop of “We Are Happy Landfill”. “Stop the Dams” is another collaboration, this time with The Sugarcubes‘ Einar Orn, protesting against dam building in Iceland’s wilderness. Demos “People” (which later became Demon Days single “DARE”) and “Don’t Get Lost in Heaven” give a sneak peek into the band’s creative process, while the Mandarin version of “Dirty Harry” provides an insight into how Gorillaz might sound if they’d been born east of the Yangtze instead of deep in the wilds of Essex, and D-Sides‘ bonus CD of remixes includes reworkings by DFA, Junior Sanchez and Hot Chip.

A special edition of D-Sides will be available in a debossed glossy dual box, and will include two exclusive Jamie Hewlett prints, a collection of Gorillaz badges, stickers and a “Choose Pazuzu” patch. The tracklisting will be the same as the standard edition.

D-Sides follows the immensely popular G-Sides, a collection of B-sides and rarities from the band’s debut album, Gorillaz.

In addition to the the album release, other news from the Gorillaz camp includes Murdoc’s new foray into Facebook, on which fans can view photo albums of the virtual star, including childhood Murdoc pictures. Fans are encouraged to add the star as a friend here.

GUITAR CENTER TO CROWN DRUM-OFF GRAND CHAMPION ON JANUARY 5, 2008
Event to take place at the Music Box @ Fonda in Hollywood, featuring ?uestlove, Angels & Airwaves, more

Guitar Center is excited to announce the Drum-Off Grand Finals will take place on January 5, 2008 at the Music Box @ Fonda in Hollywood, Calif. Now in its 19th year, Drum-Off continues to bring together thousands of the nation’s top undiscovered drummers for the chance to compete for incredible prizes, national recognition and the bragging rights of being crowned Drum-Off Champion.

This incredible night, hosted by Stephen Perkins of Jane’s Addiction, will feature performances by the four Drum-Off finalists as well as Angels & Airwaves, “Go Get A Late Pass!!!” featuring ?uestlove of The Roots, Street Drum Corps with special guests Adrian Young of No Doubt, Brooks Wackerman of Bad Religion, Shannon Leto of 30 Seconds to Mars, John Sawicki of Stomp and Byron McMackin of Pennywise.

Drummers across the country began competing over three months ago at Guitar Center stores across the country. Beginning with preliminaries in over 213 Guitar Center stores, drummers then advanced on from store preliminaries to store finals. Winners of store finals then went on to compete at district finals at 24 Guitar Center stores nationwide for the chance to advance on to one of the four regional competitions held at Guitar Centers in New York City, Hollywood, Chicago, and Houston, with the winner of each of these regions advancing on to compete to be crowned the Drum-Off 2007 Champion.

This year’s winner will receive a prize package valued at more than $45,000 including a Toyota FJ Cruiser, $10,000 cash, a feature in a Guitar Center ad campaign, a $2,500 Levi’s shopping spree, a custom designed drum kit from DW, Pearl, Tama or Gretsch, a Roland TD20 electronic drum-set, a set of cymbals custom printed with the winner’s signature, a one year drum, cymbal, stick and head endorsement deal, and a write up in Modern Drummer magazine. Additionally, store, district and regional winners will have walked away with thousands of dollars in prizes from Drum-Off partners.

“Guitar Center could not be more excited by the artists who are coming out to support the competitors as they come one step closer to being crowned Drum-Off champion,” said Dustin Hinz, Manager, Event Marketing and Promotions for Guitar Center. “Drum-Off has become a staple in the drum community and in addition to providing emerging artists the support, encouragement and opportunity they need to succeed, Guitar Center’s mission is to promote the development of community amongst drummers, encourage musicianship and further their passion for music.”

Previous Drum-Off winners have gone on to enjoy successful music careers, record albums and tour the world with noteworthy artists. 2002 Drum-Off Champion, Cora Coleman, is currently performing with legendary recording artist Prince, playing on his most recent album 3121 and at Super Bowl XLI. Eric Moore II, Drum-Off 2003 Champion, has also achieved notoriety by performing with psychedelic funk band Sly and the Family Stone as well as singer Bobby Brown.

Prior to this year’s show Guitar Center is thrilled to have the opportunity to present the “Drum Legends Award” to two of music’s greatest drummers, Steve Smith and David Garibaldi. Named one of the top 25 drummers of all time by Modern Drummer in 2001, Smith occupied the drum chair for the rock band Journey from 1978-1985. He returned to the band in 1995 for their 1996 comeback album, Trial By Fire. An innovator in funk drumming, David Garibaldi is best known as the drummer for Oakland-based funk/soul band Tower of Power. He has also worked with many amazing artists including Natalie Cole, Jermaine Jackson and Patti Austin.

This year, Guitar Center will also be giving one lucky person the chance to win a VIP trip for two to the Drum-Off Grand Finals. Starting on Nov. 1, consumers enter to win online at GuitarCenter.com. In addition to the trip, the winner will receive a meet and greet with Angels and Airwaves, ?uestlove and Street Drum Corps, $500 spending cash, a Drum-Off Grand Finals poster signed by artist Shepard Fairey and more.

Tickets to the event are available here.

STEVE AOKI JOINS FORCES WITH THRIVE RECORDS, RELEASES DEBUT MIX ALBUM
Aoki and friends collaborate and contribute exclusive mix album, Pillowface & His Airplane Chronicles

Fanatic or foe, you cannot deny how instrumental Steve Aoki has been in helping define the emerging music and nightlife culture in the U.S. today. By blurring the lines that once separated hoards of scenesters from the urban or electro fans, and divided the V.I.P.s from the not-so V.I.P.s, what this man has created under the guise of a DJ/party enthusiast is a lifestyle and media empire for youth today.

Dim Mak, his L.A.-based record label has signed and released EPs and LPs for a fine feast of bands including Bloc Party, The Mystery Jets, The Klaxons, The Rakes, Scanners, The Deadly Syndrome, Icarus Lines, Oh No! Oh My!, The Kills, Sean Na Na, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Whitey, Pony Up and Foreign Born to name but a few, helping acts to develop a strong and steady fan base with the MySpace-hopping generation in America.

Weird Science is the name both Aoki and production partner Blake Miller from Moving Units work under; remixing tracks and reshaping them for the dance floor. Mixes you’ve likely heard would be those of the Teddybears, Peaches, The Rakes, Bloc Party, Young Love, Under the Influence of Giants and The Charlatans (UK). Some of the above you will hear on this compilation.

Dim Mak clothing is booming, with a merchandise line already making waves at key boutique stores and its ubiquitous Dino-print hoodie adorning fans and celebrities around the world… It’s clear that Steve is on to something big here in the industry. Most importantly, he “gets it”, hence why so many are eager to work and collaborate on his many projects.

A cornerstone to Aoki’s success has been the ability to bridge the A-list young celebrity world with the indie (don’t shoot, SMS!) hipster scene with effortless ease. For instance, his now legendary Tuesday night at Cinespace in Hollywood are covered religiously by partner in crime The Cobrasnake and have hosted debut performances from Bloc Party, Lady Sovereign, She Wants Revenge, Wolfmother, Kaiser Chiefs, Editors, Spank Rock, The Bravery, Uffie and more.

Punks, freaks, indie snobs, fashionistas and black Amex-carrying NY/Hollywood “royalty” have all found homes at Aoki’s events and major publications such as GQ, Vanity Fair, People, Complex, The LA Times, LA Weekly, BPM, Paper and Flaunt have already favorably reported on the scene and alcohol-fueled debauchery that often goes hand-in-hand when the above are involved.

And what of the music? In a nutshell, Pillowface & His Airplane Chronicles (available Jan. 22) is a mix album that captures the current wave of electro and Nu Rave sounds that in spirit and attitude have bridged the gap between punk and electro. It’s interesting to note that this emerging sound has not drawn its biggest fanfare from the traditional dance club audience; rather it’s a new wave of young, fashionable, indie-leaning music fans that are eating up these tunes. And if you’ve been to a night like Aoki’s Cinespace Tuesdays as of late, you know how energetic, exciting and debaucherous this scene is getting. The lack of punk attitude that has plagued electronic music over the last 15 years has now finally been injected, and it’s DJs like Steve Aoki who are leading the way.

Big players in this budding movement are represented on Pillowface…, from the heavily distorted disco of France’s recent heroes Justice, to the raved up Soulwax remix of The Klaxons, to the first-ever U.S. appearance of Does It Offend You, Yeah?’s UK phenom (and appropriately titled), “We Are Rockstars”. Aoki contributes with the Weird Science remixes of Peaches and Bloc Party, and hidden gems from Goose and Yelle also make the cut. And just when you thought this was going to be just another mix CD, the vocals kick in. With help from his expensive Rolodex of creative types whom he counts as amigos, Aoki was able to assemble an impressive list of guest vocals which are layered expertly over the mix. Todd Fink from The Faint, Steve Bays from Hot Hot Heat, Mickey Avalon, Kid Sister and a host of other uber-hip mic fiends all lend a hand to Pillowface…, making this album a true family affair. Just who says what, over what tracks and when? You’ll have to hear it to be privy to this unique collaboration, folks.

NEW SAUL WILLIAMS ALBUM PRODUCED BY TRENT REZNOR AVAILABLE AS FREE DOWNLOAD
Pre-Registration open now at SaulWilliams.com; DRM-free download available Nov. 1 for free or $5 artist contribution

The Fader Label, the recording branch of The Fader, today announced the release of the new recording by esteemed poet, artist and musician Saul Williams, The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust!. Produced by Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), the download will be available for free or for a $5 contribution to support the artist. There will be no additional options given for purchase of the album.

Musicane, a tool that enables artists to sell their music, will handle fulfillment, processing, bandwidth and customer service. Those who pay will have the opportunity to choose between three download formats: 192kbit/s MP3, 320kbit/s MP3 and Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC), a format that doesn’t remove any information from the audio stream—full CD quality. A full description of each file format with pros and cons will be available on the site. Those that don’t contribute will automatically get the192kbit/s MP3. All versions are 100% DRM-free and will include a PDF with artwork and lyrics. Williams’ fans will also be able to embed Musicane’s viral player on their own blogs or profiles, which will broadcast live-updated video messages from NiggyTardust and also contain the option to download or buy the album.

The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust! is the lovechild of Trent and me,” says Williams. “The Niggytardust concept sets me free to do more on stage with costume, etc. than one might expect from a regular Saul Williams show. It allows me to put my theatre training to use. I’ve also thought long and hard about all the discussion surrounding racial epithets, etc., and chose this title as a means of furthering the dialogue while also showing how creativity will outlive and outshine hatred of any kind.”

“Working on this project was a real pleasure,” says Reznor. “Saul was interested in breaking boundaries, crossing genres and defying expectations and we learned a great deal from one another in the process. After my own recent dealings with record labels we decided to release it directly to the fans. There are obvious similarities in how Radiohead just released their new record and the way we’ve chosen to. After thinking about this way too much, I feel we’ve improved upon their idea in a few profound ways that benefit the consumer.”

SHORT FILMS CREATED FOR TRACKS ON SERJ TANKIAN’S SOLO ALBUM TO BE SCREENED IN MOVIE THEATERS ACROSS THE U.S.
Special Los Angeles screening with Serj Tankian in attendance on Oct. 23 to benefit Axis of Justice

Earlier this year, Serj Tankian—the visionary frontman for multi-platinum rock band System of a Down—asked a collection of video and film directors, painters, and digital artists to each create a video for one of the 12 tracks on his forthcoming solo debut album, Elect the Dead, which will be released on Serjical Strike/Reprise Records on Oct. 23.

The directors involved in the video project include a prestigious array of artists whom Tankian has befriended over the last decade. They include music video director Tony Petrossian (Taking Back Sunday, Slipknot, Avenged Sevenfold), who shot the video for “Empty Walls,” the first single from Elect the Dead, photographer/video director Greg Watermann (Mudvayne, Lamb of God, Howie Day), Oscar-nominated Puerto Rican playwright and screenwriter Jose Rivera (The Motorcycle Diaries), digital artist Roger Kupelian (The Lord of the Rings, Flags of Our Fathers), documentary director Sevag Vrej (System Of A Down, Fair to Midland), short film/music video director Adam Egypt Mortimer (Against Me!, Idiot Pilot) and Beirut-born filmmaker Gariné Torossian (Sparklehorse), among others.

“I asked each of the directors for their visual interpretation of my work,” Tankian explains. “They were asked not to write treatments and that they could make whatever they liked. The results have been overwhelmingly amazing!”

Among the videos posted on Tankian’s website www.serjtankian.com is an animated clip for the song “The Unthinking Majority” by filmmaker/video director Tawd Dorenfeld. Also available for viewing on the website are the videos for “Empty Walls” and “Saving Us”.

To celebrate the artistic collaboration of the music and visual interpretations of Serj Tankian’s solo album, Reprise Records and Serjical Strike, in conjunction with digital cinema/music marketing company D&E Entertainment (www.DandEentertainment.com), will screen the videos of Elect the Dead back-to-back, accompanied by an introduction by Tankian at movie theaters across the nation at 8pm on Monday, Oct. 22. Filming on location in the South Bronx in 1982, director Charlie Ahearn captured a rare look at the true origins of hip-hop culture with his groundbreaking film Wild Style. Featuring appearances by such legendary and influential old-school giants as GRANDMASTER FLASH, FAB 5 FREDDY, COLD CRUSH BROTHERS, ROCK STEADY CREW and CHIEF ROCKER BUSY BEE, this groundbreaking film is recognized worldwide as the premier hip-hop film and was inducted by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 10 best rock ‘n’ roll movies of all time. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of this captivating time capsule, Rhino will release a special edition of the DVD expanded with new extras including a mini documentary, footage of a 20th anniversary concert, interviews and unreleased photos. Wild Style will be available Oct. 23 at all retail outlets and www.rhino.com for a suggested retail price of $14.95.

The DVD contains a digital transfer from the original 16mm film with commentary by director Ahearn and Fab 5 Freddy. Several extras debut on the special anniversary edition of Wild Style including a mini documentary featuring interviews with Fab 5 Freddy, Lee Quinones, Busy Bee, Lady Pink and Ahearn plus footage from the 20th anniversary concert held at the original amphitheater, a “Bongo Barbershop” DJ battle in the Bronx featuring Grand Master Caz, a new musical short with Busy Bee titled “Busy on the Beach”, scenes from the 25th Anniversary Wild Style Reunion Show and an expanded gallery with unreleased photos.

The film follows the exploits of maverick tagger Zoro (real life graffiti artist Lee Quinones), whose work attracts the attention of an East Village art fancier (Patti Astor) and is commissioned to paint the stage for a giant Rapper’s Convention. An authentic documentation of the early days of hip-hop in the boroughs of New York, everything in Wild Style is real—the story, style, characters and most of the actors, are drawn from the community.

The film shows many early hip-hop personalities in action before they went on to acquire national acclaim. Chief among these is Fab 5 Freddy, who hosted Yo! MTV Raps from its inception and plays the brash rap promoter Phade in the movie. Producer/director/writer Ahearn credits Freddy for the film’s vision of hip-hop as a unified culture. Wild Style may not have been the first movie featuring rappers, but was the first to link graffiti, break dancing, DJing and document the birth of hip-hop nation.

About the Release:
Floratone is a brilliant, groove-heavy album by a four-member collective of the same name that features the instrumental teamwork of drummer Matt Chamberlain and guitarist Bill Frisell with producers Tucker Martine and Lee Townsend serving as equally significant imaginative forces. An 11-song collection of original soundscapes, Floratone also features a superb support team of bassist Viktor Krauss, cornetist Ron Miles and violin/viola player Eyvind Kang.

The Floratone sound is, in the words of Townsend, “futuristic roots music,” at turns jazz-vibed, swamp-funky, intensely rocking, ambiently grooved. The music drips with grit, lopes with a sweet lyricism, bursts with surprising turns, sinks in with FX’d beauty. There’s an aesthetic of euphoric journey as well as a nasty get-down-and-move sensibility. While steeped in the past, Floratone is cutting-edge, teeming with rhythmically charged music for the now. The album also spotlights Frisell’s multifarious guitar voice that ranges from straight jazz in the vein of Wes Montgomery (on “Swamped”) to spiky metallic rock (on the grinding number “The Future”) to sound-washed atmospherics (on “The Wanderer”).

SYSTEM OF A DOWN FRONTMAN TO RELEASE DEBUT SOLO ALBUM
Serj Tankian announces solo tour in support of Elect the Dead

SERJ TANKIAN, the visionary frontman for multi-platinum rock band SYSTEM OF A DOWN, has set a date to release his debut solo album, entitled Elect the Dead, which will be released on Serjical Strike/Reprise Records on October 23rd.

Known for his work with hard-rock agitators SOAD, Tankian says he had no clue he was about to make a rock record when he began to record at his home studio in Los Angeles last summer. “I was writing more traditional type songs on my piano and acoustic guitar, with a classical, almost operatic flavor; and lo and behold, it ended up being a rock record. Funny what happens when you add distorted guitars and drums,” he says. “There are political songs, funny songs, love songs, songs about painful experiences, vanity, and the environment. It has a deep melancholy that runs from the personal to the global, with a glimmer of hope in the solidarity of spirit.”

Tankian produced Elect The Dead himself and played most of the instruments, though the album does feature guest drummers John Dolmayan (SOAD) and Brian “Brain” Mantia (GUNS N’ ROSES, PRIMUS). “The singularity of vision is strong when you work alone,” he says. “I was a bit skeptical about producing it myself, but I knew how I wanted it to sound. And as I kept going, I realized it was coming together really well so I just finished it on my own. But I had to be careful to push myself like an outside producer would until it was great. I had the same energy and enthusiasm making this album as I did making the first System record.”

Born in Beirut, Lebanon, to Armenian parents, Tankian is known as an outspoken political activist who puts his money where his mouth is. In 2006, he and Dolmayan met with members of Congress in Washington, D.C., to campaign for support for the Armenian Genocide Recognition Bill. Tankian is also the co-founder, along with RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE guitarist TOM MORELLO, of Axis Of Justice, a non-profit dedicated to uniting musicians, music fans and grassroots political organizations to fight for social justice.

With System of a Down, which has released five best-selling albums, including two Number Ones in 2005—the critically acclaimed Mezmerize and Hypnotize—Tankian helped the band earn a reputation for musically innovative, politically uncompromising rock. Through it all, Tankian, who has also published a collection of his poetry, has written his own songs, amassing an archive of material from many different genres. “I write all the time for no reason but to write,” he says. “I’m just doing what I’m told to do by my heart and nothing more. I just follow my vision and end up where it takes me.”

In support of Elect the Dead, which will be released on Serjical Strike/Reprise Records on Oct. 23, Serj has lined up a bunch of dates for a tour. Touring alongside of Serj will be FAIR TO MIDLAND and Tom Morello. Check out the dates below:

BEE GEES GREATEST REMASTER TO FEATURE EXCLUSIVE REMIXES

The BEE GEES were already established hitmakers in the U.S. and the U.K. when the group became an unstoppable musical force in 1975. In four short years, Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb rose to international superstardom as they recorded a string of worldwide hits, sold 180 million records worldwide and helped define an era with the Grammy-winning Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. The Brothers Gibb capped their amazing run in 1979 with the multiplatinum Bee Gees Greatest, a double album spotlighting the group’s meteoric run of R&B dance hits between 1975 and 1979.

Out-of-print for five years, and in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Saturday Night Fever, Rhino will reissue the monumental collection as a two-CD deluxe edition that contains two previously unreleased tracks—”Warm Ride” and an extended version of “Stayin’ Alive,” originally a 12″ promo vinyl— along with four contemporary dance remixes of classic Bee Gees songs by some of today’s hot club DJs. WAXPLOITATION CELEBRATES TENTH ANNIVERSARY
New charity auctions, album planned for later this year

Established in Los Angeles by Jeff Antebi in 1997, Waxploitation has been pioneering new models in the music business and making a difference through active social causes for a decade. The company was founded as a record label for innovative artists, and broadened to include Artist Management and Music Publishing in 2000.

A decade into its history, Antebi reflects that “especially with the way the music world is today, chaotic and in somewhat of a freefall, Waxploitation has been steadily moving upwards over time by focusing on quality artists with a strong vision, attempting to do things against the grain. We’ve stayed true to important music and let long tail economics take care of the rest.”

Waxploitation holds several charity auctions each year to benefit prominent non-profits, including Oxfam, Save Darfur, the UN Refugee Agency and Human Rights Watch, and has included items donated by Angelina Jolie, RADIOHEAD, Tony Hawk, KANYE WEST, NINE INCH NAILS, OUTKAST, Julius ‘Dr. J’ Irving and more. “Waxploitation has been a great supporter of Human Rights Watch in our efforts to end ethnic cleansing in Darfur,” says Human Rights Watch’s Elizabeth Seuling. “Jeff manages to find creative ways to introduce people to the work we do.”

In mid-October, Waxploitation will launch a new charity auction through eBay’s non-profit MissionFish partner. Waxploitation is making available a number of prized signed guitars from COMMON, THE FLAMING LIPS, NICKELBACK, and DEFTONES, as well as rare items from COLDPLAY, BJÖRK, TV ON THE RADIO, to name a few.

In mid-November, Waxploitation is releasing an ambitious charity album called Causes 1 which includes exclusive and rare songs from THE BLACK KEYS, BLOC PARTY, BRIGHT EYES, CORNELIUS, DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, THE (INTERNATIONAL) NOISE CONSPIRACY, THE SHINS, SPOON, THIEVERY CORPORATION and TRAVIS, among many others, with 100% of the proceeds going to Human Rights Watch and Doctors Without Borders.

Here’s a free download from Samantha James’ debut album, Rise—in stores and online Tuesday, Sept. 25.

WIN A COPY OF U2′S POPMART LIVE IN MEXICO CITY DVD FROM MACHINE GUN FUNK AND UME!

Win a copy of the new U2 PopMart Live in Mexico City DVD, here on MachineGunFunk.com in an EXCLUSIVE giveaway! For a chance to win, e-mail JF@machinegunfunk.com and put “U2 DVD” in the subject line.

U2’s PopMart Live from Mexico City will be released on DVD on Sept. 18. Filmed at the Foro Sol Autodromo in Mexico City on Dec. 3, 1997, PopMart Live from Mexico City was directed by David Mallet and first released on video the following year; this is the first time it has been released on DVD.

Described as a sci-fi disco supermarket, the PopMart Tour opened in its “spiritual home”, Las Vegas on April 25, 1997. All trash and kitsch, PopMart introduced a giant mirrorball lemon, a 100-ft. cocktail stick—complete with olive—and the works of Lichtenstein, Warhol and Haring, to a live rock audience: a production experience never quite seen before.

Originally filmed on analog video, the film has been transferred to a digital format with re-graded and cleaned pictures. Great care has been taken to maintain the original look by simply enhancing it, with an added degree of sharpness and contrast unavailable when originally filmed. The audio has also been re-mastered and mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound.

PopMart Live from Mexico City will be available in two formats: a Standard 1-disc format containing the concert, and a special limited-edition 2-disc format, the second being a bonus disc containing previously unreleased live audio and video material, including documentaries, a PopMart tour visuals montage and DVD-ROM extras.

2K GAMES ANNOUNCES THE BIOSHOCK EP FEATURING PERIOD SONGS REMIXED BY MOBY AND OSCAR THE PUNK
Classic songs from the ‘40s and ‘50s get a futuristic makeover evoking the art deco-meets-sci-fi styling of BioShock’s underwater world

Win a BioShock XBox faceplace here on MachineGunFunk.com in an EXCLUSIVE giveaway! For a chance to win, e-mail JF@machinegunfunk.com and put “XBox” in the subject line.

2K Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), announced today the upcoming release of an exclusive EP remixed by Moby and Oscar the Punk for its highly anticipated BioShock video game. The CD will be bundled with the GameStop and EB Canada exclusive limited-edition version of BioShock when the title launches on Aug. 21 for Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Games for Windows. The CD is also available as a pre-sale gift-with-purchase from video game retailer, Game Crazy.

The three remixed tracks on the CD include “Beyond the Sea”, “God Bless the Child” and “Wild Little Sisters”, variations of which appear in their original format in the game. Music luminaries Moby and Oscar the Punk have joined forces to remix them with the game’s atmosphere in mind.

“While these classic songs from the 40’s and 50’s evoke a happier time, they take on an eerie aesthetic in BioShock’s decaying art deco-designed underwater city of Rapture,” said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K Games. “Moby and Oscar the Punk have captured that disparity with these remixes and added a new spin to these indelible classics.”

Fans of the game and the music will be able to obtain the CD as part of the limited-edition version of BioShock, which also contains a figurine of one of the game’s hulking “Big Daddy” creatures, exclusive packaging and a behind-the-scenes DVD.

Developed by 2K Boston and 2K Australia, BioShock is a “genetically-enhanced” first-person shooter set in Rapture, an underwater art deco-inspired utopia torn apart by civil war. Caught between powerful forces and hunted down by genetically modified “splicers” and deadly security systems, players have to come to grips with a deadly, mysterious world filled with powerful technology and fascinating characters. To survive, players can turn everything they encounter into a weapon, biologically modify their body with plasmids, hack devices and security systems, upgrade weapons, craft new ammo variants and experiment with different battle techniques. No encounter ever plays out the same and no two gamers will play BioShock the same way.

BioShock is rated “M” for Mature by the ESRB, and will be available on Aug. 21 in North America and Aug. 24 in Europe. For more information, visit the BioShock Web site at: www.BioShockGame.com, and the BioShock community site at www.TheCultofRapture.com.

WIN A COPY OF THE NEW SIMPSONS: TESTIFY ALBUM FROM MACHINE GUN FUNK AND SHOUT! FACTORY
With Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and a chorus of Springfield’s most sublime voices (oh, and Jackson Browne, David Byrne and B-52s, too), album features songs from seasons 10-18

Win it here on MachineGunFunk.com in an EXCLUSIVE giveaway! For a chance to win a copy of the new Simpsons: Testify album, e-mail JF@machinegunfunk.com and put “Simpsons” in the subject line.

A soundtrack so highly anticipated that even Homer would get off the couch to celebrate its arrival, The Simpsons: Testify is finally here! Set for release on September 18, 2007 from Shout! Factory, The Simpsons: Testify music CD spotlights material culled from award-winning composer Alf Clausen and features the unmistakable voices of America’s most beloved TV family: Homer (Dan Castellaneta), Marge (Julie Kavner), Bart (Nancy Cartwright), Lisa (Yeardley Smith), and Springfield’s various townsfolk (Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer). The soundtrack kicks off with Danny Elfman’s unforgettable main title theme, and continues with a collection of the best songs from the last nine seasons of the longest running primetime comedy on TV today. The album arrives just in time to accompany the premiere of Season 19 of The Simpsons on Fox.

Only on The Simpsons: Testify can you find a range of great talents from JACKSON BROWNE to “WEIRD AL” YANKOVIC, both willing to engage in self-parody that reflects the show’s uncanny irreverence. And then there is DAVID BYRNE, who while hearing a list of his vast musical accomplishments, adds with pride “And I used to wrestle under the name ‘El Diablo!’” It is Byrne who helps Homer realize the full odious potential of “Everybody Hates Ned Flanders”, even contributing an extended salsa remix, “No Me Gusta Flanders”. We’re also treated to the lyrical styling of the endearingly homicidal Sideshow Bob (as voiced by Kelsey Grammar) as he reexamines his overwhelming loathing of Bart Simpson on “The Very Reason That I Live”.

The Simpsons: Testify puts the music front and center, as the songs featured were mixed specifically for this new album. For the first time, the brilliant re-imagining of Broadway hits Evita, My Fair Lady, and The Sound of Music can be fully appreciated for all of their satirical nuance. In “My Fair Laddy,” Groundskeeper Willie plays Eliza Doolittle to Lisa’s Henry Higgins, as Willie learns both elocution and manners to the refrain of “What flows from the nose, does not go on my clothes.” And in “Yokel Chords,” Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel and his hillbilly brood take the place of the von Trapp family, with Lisa again playing the role of teacher. In this memorable parody from the most recent season, The Sound of Music line “I am sixteen going on seventeen” becomes “I have eight teeth, going on seven teeth.” Of course.

Any Simpsons fan will no doubt remember Ricky Gervais memorable appearance as the Marge-obsessed Charles Heathbar, who serenades Marge with “Lady,” which spends more time explaining its lyrics (in song) than actually saying anything romantic, with the possible exception of the closing exhortation, “don’t die.”

For those of us with a love of musical theater and the American popular songs, The Simpsons has certainly carved out an iconic place in musical history by communicating in song at the highest level. Never in recent memory has a television series made such effective use of both songs and underscore to advance plot points, support the characters’ emotions and put a lasting smile on the viewer’s face.

THE CRYSTAL METHOD CELEBRATE 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR GROUNDBREAKING DEBUT ALBUM VEGAS WITH THE RELEASE OF DELUXE EDITION
Double-CD set features remastered original release, rare and live recordings and remixes by Paul Oakenfold, MSTRKRFT, Hyper and more

In their decade-long career, THE CRYSTAL METHOD have sold over a million albums, scored a Grammy nomination and collaborated with everyone from OZZY OSBOURNE to SCOTT WEILAND to OL‘ DIRTY BASTARD. They headlined the Hollywood Bowl, rocked Coachella and played a fashion show in Milan for Donatella Versace. Meanwhile, their songs appeared in countless video games, movies and television series. Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland, who are The Crystal Method, even spent a surreal night in the Los Angeles County Jail. But before any of that happened, they made Vegas, their debut album from 1997. Marking its 10th anniversary, Jordan and Kirkland have reassessed and readdressed the long-player that started it all with a deluxe edition of the album, which will be released via Geffen/UMe on September 18.

The two-disc deluxe set offers a fresh mastering of the original ten songs on the first CD. The second CD highlights a selection of rare and live recordings plus new mixes of classic Vegas tracks from remixers personally chosen by the duo such as PAUL OAKENFOLD, MSTRKRFT, HYPER, Sta, DEADMAU5, KOMA & BONES, Tom Real vs. The Rogue Element and Myagi. Also included is the original 1993 version of the Vegas single “Comin’ Back” with the video for the album version along with the video for “Busy Child”. Preceding the deluxe edition’s release, “Busy Child” [Sta Rmx] will be available on iTunes as of August 28.

Vegas put the Las Vegas natives at the center of an electronic music scene previously occupied almost exclusively by trailblazing Brits such as UNDERWORLD, THE PRODIGY and GROOVE ARMADA. Inspired in equal parts by Jordan and Kirkland’s late night outings in the early days of the Los Angeles rave scene and their reassuringly humdrum upbringing in the Las Vegas suburbs listening to everything from disco to hip hop to metal, Vegas is a different kind of techno record. It’s got soul. “One thing people have been telling us for the past 10 years is that Vegas was the first thing to get them into electronic music,” Jordan says. “We just came up with a sound that bridged the gap between alternative and electronic music.”

The complete track listing for The Crystal Method’s Vegas (Deluxe Edition) is:

Disc One:
“Trip Like I Do”
“Busy Child”
“Cherry Twist”
“High Roller”
“Comin’ Back”
“Keep Hope Alive”

JOHN FOGERTY RELEASES NEW ALBUM, REVIVAL, ON OCT. 2
Fogerty reclaims his rightful place among America’s most iconic and revered artists with the forthcoming Revival

JOHN FOGERTY’s contribution to popular culture cannot be overstated; his songs have become part of rock’s DNA, the very building blocks upon which much of American rock and roll has been built. As the album title tantalizingly suggests, Revival represents a renewed musical spirit and heart from Fogerty that incorporates all the best elements of a career that has resonated deeply with generations of music fans and the thousands of artists that he has influenced.

“It just seemed like all the records I have made since Creedence Clearwater Revival have all been sort of pushed off center,” he says. “I felt like I was dancing around the outskirts of what is my true center. With this album, I really wanted to stay on the mark, right in the middle, right where rock ‘n’ roll is. I wanted this one to be easier, a lot more fun than some of the past records have been.”

That renewed sense of joy shines through on the self-produced Revival. The wistful, infectious opening track “Don’t You Wish It Was True” instantly puts a smile on the listener’s face. The cinematic western-theme in “Gunslinger” evokes vintage-era Creedence, while on the deliciously swampy “Creedence Song”, Fogerty correctly and humorously assesses “You can’t go wrong / if you play a little bit of that Creedence song.” His love of classic Sun Records-era rockabilly permeates “It Ain’t Right”, one of many tunes on the album that allows Fogerty, whom Rolling Stone named one of the greatest guitarists of all time, to show off his blistering guitar work. “The River is Waiting” is a gorgeous, hymn-like spiritual that features well-known vocal trio, The Waters on backup vocals. A trenchant observer of the world’s troubles, Fogerty weighs in on the current administration with the rollicking, biting “Long Dark Night” and the ‘mission critical’ statement of “I Can’t Take It No More” with its unmistakable admonition “…another fortunate son.”

THE BANGLES RETURN TO BANGLEONIA CONCERT DVD GIVEAWAY!

One of the most successful female groups of all time, the Bangles, make a triumphant return to their hometown of Los Angeles with their first-ever concert DVD, available August 14 on Shout! Factory. To coincide with this release, MachineGunFunk.com is offering an EXCLUSIVE giveaway to one lucky winner! To enter this contest (which runs until Saturday, Aug. 18), email JF@machinegunfunk.com and enter “Bangles DVD” in the subject line.

Return to Bangleonia was recorded in September 2000 at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles with the original lineup of Susanna Hoffs (Vocals/Guitar), Debbi Peterson (Vocals/Drums), Vicki Peterson (Vocals/Lead Guitar), and Michael Steele (Vocals/Bass). The DVD includes 18 songs as well as extras and a commentary track by the band.

The queens of power pop pull out all of their hits on Return To Bangleonia, from number one singles “Walk Like an Egyptian” and “Eternal Flame” to early fan favorites like “Hero Takes a Fall”. “Get The Girl”, from the film Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me is also included. Extras include acoustic performances of “Ride The Ride” and “Manic Monday,” which was written by Prince (writing under the pseudonym Christopher at the time), as well as a candid interview with the band about their storied history and a photo gallery with rare and never-before-seen photos.

The Bangles first hit the radar as a fixture on the L.A. music scene in 1981. They went on to trade their garage band roots for a distinctive pop sound featuring gorgeous harmonies that would make them one of the most successful bands of the 1980s.

The Bangles released their debut album All Over the Place on Columbia in 1984. The band’s sophomore album, the multi-platinum A Different Light (1986), contained the hit singles “Manic Monday”, “Walk Like an Egyptian” and “Walking Down Your Street.” 1988’s Everything delivered the hits “In Your Room” and “Be With You,” and the international #1 single “Eternal Flame.” The band broke up in 1989 and each of the band members went on to participate in various other projects, which only contributed to their creative growth. In 2003 they reunited and released Doll Revolution. Shout! Factory released the Susanna Hoffs and Matthew Sweet ‘60s salute Under the Covers Vol. 1 in 2006. PERRY FARRELL’S SATELLITE PARTY TAKES TO THE STATES

New York, N.Y.—Following on the heels of their European tour, Alternative rock originator Perry Farrell has announced that his groundbreaking new rock project Satellite Party will tour behind its recently released debut album, Ultra Payloaded (Bells Are Ringing Records). Fans will also be thrilled that Farrell will be performing material from Jane’s Addiction, as well as, Porno For Pyros. The outing began on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at the House of Blues in Cleveland, and is set to include 40 dates and will culminate at the House of Blues in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Oct. 10.

Three years in the making, Ultra Payloaded blends sounds as varied as rock, urban beats and symphony in what Rolling Stone Magazine calls “Farrell’s best work since Ritual.” The album also features a host of contributing musicians such as Flea and John Frusciante, Hybrid, Peter Hook, Thievery Corporation and Fergie, among others. One of the album’s highlights features an unreleased vocal track from The Doors, a song with which Farrell has been given permission by The Doors estate to work. Entitled “Woman in the Window”, Morrison sings against a backdrop of Farrell’s music, “Just try and stop us, we’re going to love” before the song culminates with an elegant piano outro. Farrell calls the track the mantra of The Solutionists. “When you hear it, it sounds as though Jim Morrison were watching us and commenting on the world today,” said Farrell, who was “in awe” of the prescience of Morrison’s images and used the song to tell of “a majestic, yet troubled Earth from the vantage point of an angel.”

Ultra Payloaded is an album that will further cement Farrell’s status as one of world’s true artistic visionaries. More than just an album, it is a wake-up call to the world’s people about global warming. The album’s message is imbued with the same passion and idealism with which Farrell has lived his life— from working to better the environment to defending human rights. Currently, Perry Farrell and Satellite Party are working closely with Green Mountain and the NRDC to cool off the planet.

Yet, while there is a message within Satellite Party, it is still an album first and foremost, and it’s a record that finds Farrell in prime form.

UPCOMING GLORIA ESTEFAN ALBUM WILL REVISIT CUBAN, SALSA ROOTS

Sony-BMG Music Entertainment and Burgundy Records announce the release of Gloria Estefan’s new Spanish-language album, 90 Millas, in stores September 18. Having sold over 70 million albums and recorded 24 albums, 90 Millas brings Gloria back to where it all began—her roots. Produced by her husband, Emilio Estefan, the collection of newly recorded original Spanish-language songs pays tribute to the roots of Cuban music while infusing a modern influence into the traditional rhythms.

The album also pays homage to the most influential and universally respected Latin musicians of the past fifty years. Some of the artists joining Estefan on this album include Grammy award-winning artist Carlos Santana, Johnny Pacheco (whom many refer to as the “godfather of salsa”), trumpet virtuoso Alfredo “Chocolate” Armenteros, conga drum diva Sheila E., actor and musician Andy Garcia, and Cachao, who is credited as the creator of mambo.

This blend of musicians on 90 Millas is historically significant on a number of levels. This is the first, and quite possibly the last time that all of these legendary artists will play together on one CD. The newly released first single, “No Llores” features guest performances by famed Latin musicians Carlos Santana, Sheila E. and Jose Feliciano; just one of the incredible collaborations found on this CD.

ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA ON TOUR AGAIN THIS SUMMER

Zappa Plays Zappa, the concert experience that brings the music of the late Frank Zappa to the stage, under the direction of Dweezil Zappa, embarked again this summer on a world tour. The tour started July 18 at Winnipeg’s Centennial Hall with a total of 30 performance dates set for the tour’s first leg which concludes in Los Angeles at the end of August. Following a break, Zappa Plays Zappa embarks on a 17-city European tour including dates in the U.K., Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

In concept and performance, Zappa Plays Zappa offers audiences an opportunity to spend an evening with Frank Zappa’s music, performed meticulously by a group of top-flight musicians who have been schooled in its subtleties. Far from a “tribute band,” Zappa Plays Zappa is more of a vehicle that underscores the compositional genius of Frank Zappa much as a symphony orchestra would perform pieces by a master composer. Nate Chenen, writing about Zappa Plays Zappa in the New York Times recognized this when he wrote that the show fully realized Dweezil’s intent for it to be “an argument for Frank Zappa’s legitimacy as a composer.”

Frank Zappa died in 1993 after a career that saw him record over 80 albums. Today, the younger Zappa and his band mates are taking full advantage of the wealth and breadth of the material contained therein. “What we’re preparing to do for this tour is perhaps even more complex than what we did on the first tour,” says Dweezil. “Last year we learned about 40 songs from a very popular period of Frank’s career and this year we will be learning about 30 more new ones that are somewhat more obscure. The tour will include material from We’re Only in It For The Money, Absolutely Free, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, Joe’s Garage, You Are What You Is, The Yellow Shark and much more, including orchestral works.”

Frank Zappa will be, quite literally, visible during the Zappa Plays Zappa concerts. Large screen video of Zappa will be accompanied musically by the band enabling concert goers who might never had the opportunity to see Frank Zappa on stage in person to have this experience first-hand. Dweezil will rotate Frank Zappa video performances over the course of the tour.

The band Dweezil (lead guitar) has assembled for this year’s Zappa Plays Zappa is composed of veterans of last year’s tour including Joe Travers (drums), Billy Hulting (percussion), Scheila Gonzalez (keyboards, saxophone, vocals), Aaron Arntz (keyboards/trumpet), Peter Griffin (bass) and Jaime Kime (rhythm guitar). Joining the tour this year is Ray White, the vocalist who toured and recorded with Frank Zappa during the period of such albums as Tinsel Town Rebellion, You Are What You Is and Zappa in New York (his is the lead vocal on beloved song “The Illinois Enema Bandit”).

Dweezil is also working on bringing Zappa Plays Zappa into the home with a feature length performance DVD that documents the 2006 tour. It is expected to be released early this summer, concurrent with the 2007 tour.

Zappa Plays Zappa is an undertaking with a higher purpose in mind beyond filling seats with concert goers. Dweezil Zappa explains, “I think my Dad’s music deserves to be heard by a wider audience. I really think he’s been misunderstood for far too long, which brings me back to why I’m doing this: I’m so in awe of his accomplishments and want more and more people to know about him, and I think the best way for people to first discover his music is on a visceral level in a live situation. I think you have to be confronted with the complexity and the beautiful subtlety of all of it to fully appreciate the artistry of it.”
