The boys are stepping it up slightly for week two…

Rock week was fun on The Lambert Show, er… I mean, American Idol. As I expected, Adam stole the show from the beginning with a sexually playful and charged version of “Whole Lotta Love”, which worked very well for him for him. All comments about his sexuality aside, he’s able to draw attention from both sexes where it doesn’t even matter what he prefers.

The biggest mistake of the week was that Allison Iraheta went home, while Danny Gokey (complete with the scream heard ’round the world) is still here. I’ve realized that he’s very smug and something seems false about him. I’m glad Kris stayed, even though this wasn’t his best performance, and he looks miserable in the duet form as well as the entire format of this week’s show.

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve been able to write, due to my travels to WrestleMania in Houston; however, I’ve been keeping up with Idol and let me tell you, I’m glad the Wiggler is gone. To sum it up, obviously she has done herself no favors by being quietly slammed by Simon the next week during judgment; however, at least Scott had a great attitude and true heart throughout the competition.

For this week’s edition, the most memorable points were Allison Iraheta’s almost Pink-like rendition of “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” by Aerosmith, Adam Lambert’s “Born to Be Wild” (we figured out in my household he’s like Axl Rose/Guns N’ Roses meets AC/DC meets Queen). And as for Lil Rounds’ version of “The Rose”, it wasn’t necessarily one of the best performances, but she finally stood up for herself after being grilled her week after week by Simon to figure out who she is as a artist. I liked her attempt at R&B/gospeling up the Bette Midler classic, but she’s in trouble.

Quick thoughts on American Idol’s country week:

Michael Sarver sang Garth Brooks’ “Ain’t Going Down ‘Til the Sun Comes Up”, and it frankly lacked the energy that made Garth’s music special in this genre. Michael has the chops to be a country singer, but why can’t he loosen up? And why do contestants enjoy being smartasses to the judges this year?

American Idol: Season 8… this is not good, America. They let some people in that shouldn’t be here at all, with a healthy dose of mediocre-at-best talent amid the group of remaining contestants. This is going to be a painful season of karaoke numbers, where when the bar is set low, so much so, that even the resident psycho may go through.

VIII – 12.29.08

Welcome to the latest edition of the VIII, where, as before, I’ll be featuring eight different performers, currently on the move, whom I have enjoyed in the past, with a few recent discoveries as well.

I discovered Sacha Sacket and the LadyKillers recently and reviewed them on my LGBT online magazine, OutImpact.com, and they have quickly become one of my favorites, with combination of styles ranging from U2 and Coldplay to Rufus Wainwright. An interestinf fact is that their album, Live at The Zone, was recorded live at a sex club in Los Angeles. “Desire” (from said album) is my favorite pick, with the lyrics and the great electric guitar/piano accompaniment:...read full article...

VIII – 12.1.08

Welcome to the latest edition of the VIII, where, as before, I’ll be featuring eight different performers, currently on the move, whom I have enjoyed in the past, with a few recent discoveries as well.

Danny Ross, is a excellent pop vocalist and pianist, very similar in style to Norah Jones and Bens Fold Five with the winter-appropriate “When You’re Down (And You’re Out)” from his 2007 release, Introducing Danny Ross! EP. We all go through moods like this, and this particular track could have easily been included in the Peanuts series if it were made now.
